With the new release of Sitecore 9, so many new things have come out that now it is time to focus on SXA 1.5. This version of SXA is compatible with Sitecore 9 and Sitecore 8.2 update 5 (update 6 is not covered). The new version brings us 2 important things which makes SXA now reliable "maker" of the websites:

  • Shared sites functionality
  • Delegated areas

Shared sites

The idea for shared sites is that one website is treated as a repository for other sites under the same tenant. This option can be activated on a tenant level in the field Sharing

sxa 1.5 shared sites

With enabling this option, all your Page Designs, Partials, Rendering Variants, Styles etc will be available in all your other sites.

sxa 1.5 shared sites

Treat this website as a "skeleton" for the others. All sites under the same tenant will be able to pick up everything under that site, so you should plan it carefully, you do not want to place data sources which are valid for one site and not for the other.

Example for data source created under the shared site

sxa 1.5 delegated areas

Delegated areas

This option is used for enabling the sharing of the pages. To make some page shareable, you need to do the following:

  • Go to the item you want to share
  • Go to the configure tab and choose Clone
  • Select the location where you want the item to be cloned
  • A dialog will ask you, do you want to make this item and its children an SXA Delegated Area
  • Click Yes

Your delegated areas will be visible in the following setting:
/sitecore/content/SUG/sugnederland/sugnl/Settings/Shared Sites Settings. Note: you are not supposed to edit this setting manually.

What this will do is, all the items which have been assigned to the Delegated Area will be editable only from it's original source. If you change the original, the items in the Delegated are will be also automatically updated.

With these two options, now you can organize the structure of the websites, what is shared, what not. In theory, you could also have two shared websites, one for content and one for Partials, Designs, Styles, Variants, etc. It is completely up to you.

This functionality is if I have to say one of the biggest improvement points which SXA team has made. With it, your creation of Multisites and content strategy becomes way easier.
